The Importance of ‘Why’ You Want to Start a Business

It seems like ‘the thing’ these days to have your own business. Everyone is raving about the joys of working from home. I don’t disagree that it’s awesome to have the ability to start a business from your computer or just remotely, period. However, just like anything in life, it’s not for everyone.

When you have a good thing going, it’s great but the idea of getting into a business to get rich quick or looking for some magic formula to where you don’t have to do anything is a fantasy. Those ultimately lead to dead ends, frustration and more importantly it ends with quitting. Just having some point of reference for yourself about why you want to start a business will do wonders for you in the long run. Here’s why…

1.) It may lead you to what you want to do

There are so many legit opportunities out there aligned with your skills or interests and knowing ‘why’ can help you narrow down all those fields. For example, if you want to be with your children you may think of running a daycare. If you just love driving and socializing you may want to start a driving service, and so on…

2.) It may lead you to the duration of how long you want to run your own business

If your reason for wanting to start a business is because you’ll be on maternity leave and won’t get paid, you may want something temporary like selling Avon or Lu La Ro. Since these are direct selling companies, the entire formula and product line are laid out, there’s minimal work on your part as far as that goes and you can do it for as little or as long a time as you’d like and then jump right back into your routine when you’re ready.

3.) It will keep you on track when you try to go in 10 million different directions

If you know your ‘why’ you can create a simple plan of action from the beginning and keep referencing it when you need to get back on track. Because there are so many things to get into, it’s easy to know that you can do them all and then get caught up in which one you should actually be pursuing. Go back to your plan of action whenever you feel this way and stay on track.

4.) It will remind you not to give up on those tough days

If you’ve sworn off never working for someone again or told yourself you want to be home with your children when they get off that school bus or never face getting laid off again, you will remember to push through your anxiety and never give up on making things happen for yourself.

Keep your ‘why’ on your mind and keep your plan of action handy so that you know your path and never lose focus. Of course tweak things as you go along but maintain your overall outlook on your business and why you want it and you’ll be just fine for the long haul. If you need help or encouragement, reach out.
